The United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) is a three-step exam that evaluates a medical graduate’s ability to practice medicine in the United States. It is required for all foreign-trained doctors who wish to pursue residency or medical practice in the U.S.

What is the USMLE?

Step 1 Assesses basic science knowledge After 2nd year of MD
Step 2 CK Clinical knowledge and application After 4th year of MD
Step 3 Clinical management, patient care & readiness for independent practice After Residency Entry (in the USA)
  • Administered by the NBME (National Board of Medical Examiners) and FSMB (Federation of State Medical Boards)
  • Required for ECFMG Certification – mandatory for medical residency in the U.S.
